Endoscopy is a medical procedure that allows a doctor to observe the inside of the body without performing major surgery. The tube-like endoscope (fibroscope) is inserted into natural openings. An endoscopy can have advantages including no scarring, quick recovery time, and less or no time in hospital.
Under the field of gynaecology, the 2 main types of surgery are: Laparoscopy and Hysteroscopy.
Laparoscopy
Laparoscopy is a procedure to look inside your abdomen by using a laparoscope. A laparoscope is like a thin telescope with a light source. It is used to light up and magnify the structures inside the abdomen. A laparoscope is passed into the abdomen through a small incision (cut) in the skin. A camera is attached to the end of the telescope and the image is viewed on a video monitor. Surgery is carried out while looking at this monitor.
Hysteroscopy
Hysteroscopy is a procedure where a thin, lighted tube (Endoscope) is inserted inside the uterine cavity through a cervix. The Surgeon can look through the Hysteroscope into your uterine cavity and can see whether the ostia, endometrium or cavity has any pathology. Similarly outer end of the Hysteroscope is attached to a video camera, which allows us to view and record the image.
